Domaine le Petit St Vincent - Saumur-Champigny "Les Poyeux" 2020
This Saumur "Les Poyeux" is vibrant, mineral and profound.
In the small circle of elite producers in the heartland of Saumur-Champigny in Varrains, the lively, friendly and talented Dominique Joseph is impossible to miss. Fully organically farmed since 1992, the Domaine grows 12 hectares of vineyard perfectly located over 55 different locations. "Les Poyeux" is a single vineyard ideally located with south exposure to the sun. Dominique Joseph has one hectare in "Les Poyeux" split into two vineyards growing on yellow sandy soils at the top of the slope and on clay and limestone in the lower part of the slope.
The bouquet is powerful and opens up to notes of sage, wild flowers and black fruits. The palate is dense, yet vibrant with aromas of black fruits; wet forest arising from an otherwise mineral structure.
This is very impressive indeed. It can be enjoyed at a barbecue, with lamb cutlets or slow cooked lamb shoulder. Drink now or keep in the cellar up to 2028+. 100% Cabernet Franc.
- What we say
- Technical notes
"The “Les Poyeux” is by all means a powerful wine, multi-layered, complex and deep. However, there is an absolutely beautiful fresh breeze coming through with wet stone aromas and lots of energy. Try it, adopt it."
At Domaine le Petit Saint Vincent, Dominique Joseph wants to make Cabernet Franc in all its versatility. The 55 plots owned by the Domaine at different locations, soils and sun exposure provide just that. The organic vineyards are harvested by hand and the grapes are destemmed to undergo their maceration in concrete vats for the blended cuvées and in an oak vat for “Les Poyeux”. A low yielding vineyard is always offering wines of great depth and complexity. Once the maceration or infusion is done, fermentation is completed with respect to the fruit.
The “Les Poyeux” cuvée is then matured for twelve months on fine lees in French oak barrels and then an extra seven months in a concrete tank.
