Domaine Nicolas Faure
Domaine Nicolas Faure
Domaine Nicolas Faure is a one-man Domaine located in Meuilley, behind the city of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The Domaine was born out of the determination and the strong passion that Nicolas has for wine. He did not inherit vineyards in Burgundy nor its rules or tradition and is building his Domaine from scratch solely based on his own conviction and vision.
Nicolas learned his skills from the best. In 2006, he worked at Domaine Agnès Paquet in Meloisey and in 2007 he did an internship at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. During this time Nicolas attended the famous Beaune Wine University and in 2009, he spent one year at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave working both in the vineyards and at the winery during harvest. Then Nicolas went on a trip to New Zealand to work for Fromm winery in Marlborough.
In 2010 he returned to Burgundy to work for Domaine de la Romanée Conti until 2015. In the meantime, he worked on his own project and future Domaine. Finally, since March 2015, in order to further his development Nicolas has been working at Domaine Prieuré-Roch part-time. It is extremely impressive for someone so young to have had such a diverse range of experience. As a result, his motivation and vision are intact and pure. Here lies his biggest asset.

Nicolas took over a vineyard in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the climat* “les Herbues” on the Vosne-Romanée side in 2010 and worked hard to adapt the vines to his own standard of winegrowing. He expects Grand Cru vineyard quality and nothing less and he is adapting what he learned from the best to work on his own scale. Whatever the appellation the vineyard is planted on, he does “haute-couture” work and does it all himself.
He believes in organic farming and in a non-interventionist approach in the winemaking. The vineyards are only making low yields thus producing naturally concentrated juice. There is no addition of anything in his wines other than a little bit of sulphur. His reds are made using whole bunches crushed in an original vertical press similar to that at Domaine Leroy.
In 2011, he released his first vintage of Nuits-Saint-Georges “Les Herbues”. He made it entirely from a friend’s cellar and produced only a thousand bottles. Since 2013, Nicolas took over three more small vineyards. The first vineyard has Aligoté Doré vines that are more than 100 years old. This vineyard is located in the Haute-Côte-de-Beaune next to some vineyards of the appellation Pernand-Vergelesses. The second is a vineyard of Gamay located in Premeaux-Prissey and finally he now has a vineyard of Bourgogne Pinot Noir located in the Côte de Nuits. Furthermore, in 2015, he took over the management of a vineyard in Aloxe-Corton and the first bottles of this wine were the 2015 vintage.
It is only with the vintage 2014 that Nicolas had enough tools and a small winery to make the vintage comfortably. He is now slowly developing his holding, cleverly taking over worthwhile vineyards from great locations. For Nicolas, there are no rules to winemaking and the most important thing is the quality of the wine.
The talent and passion of Nicolas will take him far, with his wines already impressive, and although his production is extremely limited (in 2014 he only produced around ten barrels of 228 litres), his future is very bright.
Clos Cachet is honoured to import Domaine Nicolas Faure’s wine into Australia and to promote a young and talented winemaker whose workmanship deserves to be rewarded.

STRICTLY ALLOCATED: Since these wines are some of the rarest and the most in-demand in the world, only clients with whom Clos Cachet has an existing relationship will be considered for an allocation. The Faures are deeply interested in how their wines are consumed. The Domaine insists on an appropriate and respectful amount of bottle age before their wines are served, and endeavour to have them shared amongst wine lovers – ideals which we intend to practice. All Nicolas Faure wines are imported directly from the Domaine, guaranteeing their provenance.
