Domaine Nicolas Faure | THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED 2018 VINTAGE RELEASE

THE BURGUNDIES EVERY CONNOISSEUR WANTS!

We're very proud to release the 2018s of Nicolas Faure, since we adore the quality and the character of these wines. Put simply, they are real overachievers. Again, being able to import these wines is a blessing since the demand is insatiable and  have become desired by connoisseurs. There are good reasons for that!

Domaine Nicolas Faure is a one-man Domaine located in Meuilley, behind the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The Domaine was born out of the determination and the strong passion that Nicolas has for wine. He did not inherit vineyards in Burgundy, nor its rules or tradition, and has built his Domaine from scratch solely based on his own conviction, experience and vision.

Nicolas learned his skills from the best. In 2006, he worked at Domaine Agnès Paquet in Meloisey and in 2007 he did an internship at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. During this time Nicolas attended the famous Beaune Wine University and in 2009, he spent one year at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave working both in the vineyards and at the winery during harvest. Then Nicolas went on a trip to New Zealand to work for Fromm winery in Marlborough.

In 2010 he returned to Burgundy to work for Domaine de la Romanée Conti until 2015. Meanwhile, he worked on his own project and future Domaine. For about a year, in order to further his development, Nicolas worked at Domaine Prieuré-Roch part-time. And since 2017, he has been working at his wife's Domaine, another rising star, called Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet.

It is extremely impressive for someone so young to have had such a diverse range of experience. As a result, his motivation and vision are intact and pure. Here lies his biggest asset.

As it is with star producers, the demand largely exceeds supply. Be quick! There is not enough for everyone.

CRITIC RATINGS BELOW

“My first visit to Meuilley was in the summer of 2016 – and while I had heard about the wines from Nicolas Faure, he was then still relatively unknown.

Now two years later his wines are famous – and at the entrance to the cellar I met the Danish importer of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti .. lets call him “Ib” … who was also checking out this small and now quite hyped estate. The hype is real … although Nicolas Faure is making these wines partly as a “hobby” project, alongside his “work” as vineyard manager/Chef de culture at Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet – another one of the rising stars of Fixin and Vosne-Romanée.

It’s now very hard to find the wines of Nicolas Faure even in Burgundy, and prices are soaring, and they are now quite expensive in restaurants”

  • Steen Ohman - WineHog (July 2018)

"I came unprepared as I never tasted the wines before – but the tasting revealed a style and quality of the wines served, that I have never encountered before. This is not about points or ratings, and the wines from these rather modest terroirs can’t match the complexity and greatness of a grand cru – they can however offer a presence, energy and balance rarely found in bigger and more expensive wines."

TASTING NOTES

  • COTEAUX BOURGUIGNONS "MES GAMAYS" 2018 -

The Coteaux Bourguignons Mes Gamay is a rich, forward and floral wine with plenty of expressive red and dark fruit. On the palate, there is generous fruit offering nice drinkability. A delightful entry-level wine offering both intensity and depth, and a wine tasting well above its level. Energetic and vivacious for the vintage.

(Drink from 2019) – Good – (86 – 87p) – Steen Ohman - WineHog - Tasted 21/05/2019 from cask

  • BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR "AUX ARGILLIÈRES" 2018

The Bourgogne Les Argillieres is a step up from the otherwise gorgeous 2017. The nose is brimming with ripe and generous red fruit – yes, a somewhat hot vintage – but forward and with a lovely organic feel. Again, this is floral and expressive with a depth and complexity rarely seen at this level. Tremendous mid-palate generosity offering a delightful view of this lower Premeaux terroir. Ok a bit generous here …

(Drink from 2024) – Good+ – (88 – 89p) – Steen Ohman - WineHog - Tasted 21/05/2019 from cask

  • ALOXE CORTON 2018

The Aloxe-Corton is the bigger wine – or should I say was the better wine when I tasted the 2018s in May. I preferred the Aloxe-Corton to the NSG due to its vivid freshness and lovely energy. It comes from two plots – Les Caillettes and Les Paulands – the latter of which was the basis of the 2015, whereas Les Caillettes began being included in the cuvée the following year. The nose is fresh and vivid: lovely mineral notes supporting the earthy aromas and fine organic fruit. The fruit is fresh and energetic – 2018s can be very vibrant – and is a lovely complement to the Aloxe terroir, giving a charming and vivid wine. On the day, showing better than the Herbues!

(Drink from 2027) – Very Good+ – (90 – 91p) – Steen Ohman - WineHog - Tasted 21/05/2019 from cask

  • NUITS-ST-GEORGES "LES HERBUES" 2018

The Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Herbues was showing somewhat hotter than the Aloxe-Corton on this occasion. The Herbues offered a generous nose – rich, but with a fine energy and a delightful mineral note. On the palate, it is generous and almost velvety, offering fine depth. I was a bit surprised by the generosity here – but let’s wait and see. As with the 2015, it will most likely need some time.

(Drink from 2026) – Very Good+ – (89 – 91p) – Steen Ohman - WineHog - Tasted 21/05/2019 from cask

  • BOURGOGNE ALIGOTÉ "CORVÉES DE BULLY" 2018

The Bourgogne Aligoté from Nicolas Faure is very impressive, saline and fresh, with a joyful texture. The nose jumps out of the glass with plenty of presence. It could certainly compete with other great Chardonnays of the region, and is simply one of my top two Aligotés in Burgundy today – the other coming from Domaine Leroy.

(Drink from 2022) Alex Rougeot - 811 bottles produced, 24 in Australia.

  • BOURGOGNE HAUTES COTES DE BEAUNE 2018

This straight Chardonnay is planted in Pernand-Vergelesses, next to Nicolas Faure's Aligoté plot towards the back of the hill of Corton. The wine is initially generous, framed with a lovely silky, citrus-like acid, with hints of wet stone and crushed rocks. The expressive nose reveals a beautiful depth with white flowers, white peaches and lemon peel. The palate is vibrant, well balanced with great density, and contains plenty of zip and nerve. A stunning example from climes of Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and a new addition to the Faure portfolio.
