Domaine Duroché: 2022 Release

"Pierre Duroché has produced another superlative set of wines in 2022." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate.

Extraordinary and Precise Gevrey-Chambertin. This is the hallmark of Domaine Duroché who has once again impressed me with his 2022s. I know by now his level of quality should not surprise me, but somehow they just continue to be more exceptional every time I taste them.

As expected all his Pinot Noirs are hitting over 90 points in ratings, with the powerhouse Grand Crus reaching 99 points! The Chambertin Clos-de-Beze is "glorious aromatic and seductively thrilling" in such a subtle style that I struggle to comprehend how he does it. These aren't flashy wines that hit you in the face as you open the bottle, these are cuvees that have you taking a sip and sitting back in your chair with a quiet "wow".

"The vintage got off with a good start, with a quite dry and pleasant spring. On June 21, 2022, Gevrey-Chambertin was struck by a fierce hail storm coming from Combe de Lavaut, causing massive floods in the village. As a result, Lavaut’s vines were affected, however, the drought of the following days helped in reversing the damages. August was very hot, speeding up the natural cycle of the vines. We started harvesting on August 26, 2022. The vintage is marked by a lovely balance and a pure aromatic definition. The tannins are elegant and crisp for this vintage of extremes." - Pierre Duroché on the 2022 vintage

This is the finale of the Burgundy 2022 vintage releases and I could not be more proud and honoured to share with you these wines today. There is nothing that can stop Pierre Duroché and I cannot promise stock will remain available for more than a few minutes!

Tasting Notes

BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY 2022

The 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay has a light nose with red apples, dewy meadow touches, and lime. The palate is rounded with a Corton-Charlemagne-like texture, a Chardonnay with real “girth”. The finish has low acid, but it is clean and caressing, with hints of candy floss and nectarine. Neal Martin, Vinous.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 2022

A substantial cuvée from multiple plots. Fresh bright purple. Concentrated raspberry and bilberry, good acidity, no more than medium bodied but still with energy, redcurrant and raspberry jam behind. Drink from 2028-2033. 90-93pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN "LES JEUNES ROIS" 2022

Planted in 1953, with tiny berries on the vines. Rich purple, dark berries on the nose, glossy fruit, nearer to raw than super ripe, fine even fruit across the palate, a little touch of acidity, still so youthful. Drink from 2028-2034. 91-94pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU "LAVAUT-SAINT-JACQUES" 2022

Bright purple. This is beautifully elegant, a lovely balance once again. Instead of being plump up at the front, this is all about the intensity at the back. More in strawberry fruit, with medium plus density at the back, but excellent persistence. Drink from 2030-2037. 94-96pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2022

A deep and vibrant ruby purple. This also has the seductive quality one wants but definitely is more precise, more subtle. There is a special backbone to this wine which makes it complete rather than just superficially attractive. This Charmes-Chambertin has a definite mineral finish. Drink from 2031-2040. 95-97pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE GRAND CRU 2022

The vines were planted in 1920. A fine even purple. This has a glorious aromatic quality, floral in excelsis, seductively thrilling, with an ease of access which belies just how well this is constructed. Brilliantly nuanced and entirely seamless with a long lush yet mineral finish. Drink from 2032-2040+. 97-99pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
