Tasting Notes

The “Rue aux Vaches” unwinds in the glass generously, with citrus oil, Anjou pear, and white peach notes followed by savoury pastry aromas.

An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. “Rue aux Vaches” is situated just below the famed Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Les Pucelles”, and the only cuvée to be fully processed in Alvina Pernot's home winery; it has also only been bottled in magnum this vintage.

From a lieu-dit just below Les Pucelles, the 2021 Puligny-Montrachet La Rue aux Vaches contributed just a single barrel that has been entirely bottled in magnum. This shows a little more reduction on the nose, but there is real intensity here with subtle undergrowth scents, light touches of wild mint filtered through the citrus fruit. The palate is very well balanced with a bitter lemon entry, fine weight and depth with quite a broad, spicy finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Excellent. 92pts, Neal Martin, Vinous. 100% Chardonnay. MAGNUM 1500ml.

"Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting new producers to hit our shores. From a phenomenal winemaking family, her style is precise, elegant and delicately reductive."

Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels within the large Pernot holdings. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels mainly from François Frères, until they were racked for bottling.
