Chateau Troplong-Mondot - Vintage Offer
Sitting at 43 hectares, with 25 sub-terroirs and 3 grape varieties, Troplong Mondot is one of the appellation’s largest vineyards. Vines first established in 1700 with a chateau built in 1745, Raymond-Théodore Troplong shaped the identity and the configuration of the estate along with his nephew, Edouard Mondot, who added his surname in, thus creating Troplong Mondot. Now run by Aymeric de Gironde, the vineyard is planted to 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cab Franc.
2013: Full-bodied and atypically rich and concentrated for a 2013, it boasts beautiful blueberry and crème de cassis fruit as well as underlying chalky minerality, and good richness and concentration. It is a noteworthy homage to Christine Vallete’s brilliant efforts at Troplong Mondot, which resulted in the elevation of this estate in the 2012 St.-Emilion classification. It can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. 92-94 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate.
2016: The 2016 Troplong Mondot is fabulous. Powerful, dense and explosive, the 2016 has a lot to say. Super-ripe dark cherry, raspberry jam, chocolate, spice and new oak give the wine much of its lush, exotic feel. The chateau has moved in a totally different stylistic direction since this wine was made, but there is no denying the 2016 is striking. 96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
2017: The 2017 Troplong Mondot is stunning, just as it was an en primeur. Rich and ample, yet endowed with striking energy as well, the 2017 is the first vintage made by new CEO Aymeric de Gironde and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos. The 2017 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. All of the power that is typical of this site is evident, it seems to come so naturally, and yet picking earlier and then using a lighter hand in the cellar yielded a Troplong of uncommon energy and vibrancy. The 2017 has been nothing short of thrilling on the four occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far. 98+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
2018: The 2018 Troplong Mondot will take readers who haven't tasted these wines in a few years aback. Stunning in its aromatic presence, the 2018 is silky, medium in body and super-refined. Once again, I am blown away by the wine's total sense of precision. The Cabernets are only 15% of the blend and yet the 2018 is so strongly marked by floral and savoury accents. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, rose petal and lavender all build in the glass. The 2018 is regal, refined and absolutely exquisite. 97 points, Antonio G, Vinous.
2019: The 2019 Troplong Mondot is a ringing endorsement of the new direction, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of wild berries, violets, coniferous forest floor, liquorice, raw cocoa and subtle spices, followed by a full-bodied, velvety and layered palate that’s seamless and perfumed, its enveloping core of succulent fruit framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. Harmonious and penetrating, I never thought I’d taste a wine like this from Troplong Mondot. 98 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate.
2020: Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of mulberries, blackberries and red cherries mingled with hints of rose petal, liquorice and exotic spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a satiny attack that segues into a vibrant, polished mid-palate, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Having seen only 65% new oak and with malolactic fermentation completed in tank rather than in barrel, it’s remarkably pure and seamless. With the 2020 vintage, this estate’s stylistic redemption appears to be complete. 98+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate.
