Tasting Notes

An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. Within the Pernot holdings, Alvina and her husband favor earlier-picked fruit. This Corton-Charlemagne is part of an exchange with another grower.

The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from the Pernot family, from vines situated on the Pernand side. This is very aromatic and complex on the nose, with white flowers infusing yellow fruit, hints of brioche and grilled almond. The palate is very well balanced with wonderful poise, a citric thread of acidity and attractive salinity. This is one of the best Corton-Charlemagne wines that I tasted during my weeks in Burgundy. It is far superior to the 2022. 95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous. 100% Chardonnay.

What we say

"Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting new producers to hit our shores. From a phenomenal winemaking family, her style is precise, elegant and delicately reductive."

Technical notes

Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels within the large Pernot holdings. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels mainly from François Frères, until they were racked for bottling.
