Tasting Notes

This Saint-Romain “Combe Bazin” Chardonnay is fresh with some delicate fruit and measured richness.

Domaine Rougeot of Meursault has a long history of producing exquisite white Burgundy. Marc Rougeot, the owner and winemaker, has a fine talent for producing generous, elegant and balanced Chardonnays. The vineyard of this Saint-Romain is located on a steep slope and planted with old vines, approximately 90 years old. Even though Saint-Romain doesn’t have any vineyards classified as 1er Cru yet, the motion is well under way and this vineyard is set to qualify.

This wine opens with refined white floral aromas, some ripe peach, hazelnut and orange rind. The palate is driven by natural minerality, a fresh acidity and some beautiful flavours of white flower, nuts and buttered pastry. It can be paired with foie gras toasts and charcuterie, as well as soft cheeses and white meat. It is great to drink now but will benefit from two to three years of cellaring.

Picked earlier but riper, old vines, 42 hl/ha from 85 year old vines. A lovely pale lemon colour. The nose shows a little bit of the wood and also the open style of un-sulphured wine, but barely oxidative. Stunning wine! Enough acidity to back up the generous fruit, with a fabulous long finish. Drink from 2025-2028. 90-93 points - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

"This Saint-Romain “Combe Bazin” is a refined Chardonnay due to the cool climate of its village, located at 600 meters above sea level. In the meantime, because of the old vines and the great sun exposure of the vineyard, the wine has great complexity. It is fine value."

The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard. When the grapes arrive at the winery, they are destemmed and gently brought to the press. After a long and gentle press cycle, the must* is pumped into a concrete tank to undergo its alcoholic fermentation. “Combe Bazin” is vinified like a Meursault, with a long maturation in oak barrels for twelve months. However, there are no new oak barrels used, so that the wine can express its terroir* as much as possible.

*Must is the term for freshly pressed juice that for a red wine contains the skins, seeds and stems of the fruit. For a white wine must only refers to the juice.

*Terroir is the specific combination of location, vineyard, climate and people that create a wine. Accordingly, different terroirs produce different wines.
