To celebrate the release of the 2023 Vintage of Mount Mary I thought it would be best to enjoy a decadent evening dining in the picturesque Sydney Harbour. Please join me at Aria Sydney for a selection of 12 different Mount Mary wines paired with a four course meal.
On arrival you will be greeted with a glass of Champagne Pierre Paillard from the grand Cru village of Verzenay, a perfect aperitif to open the palate and introduce yourself to Sam Middleton, winemaker of Mount Mary and the man of the hour!
Once settled, Alex Rougeot will formally introduce and welcome Sam Middleton to the table to share his story as the first entree is served. A flight of Triolet is welcomed as the first pairing, with the new vintage 2023 followed by 2017 and 2015 bringing to the table a beautiful natural acid profile with an appealing, juicy fruit expression.
As Sam dives into the nuances of Yarra Valley vines and the intricate viticultural practices he adheres to, three tastings of Chardonnay will be poured. With 2023 being a 'truly exceptional' year for Chardonnay in the Yarra Valley, it shall be a joy to experience the complexities on the palate followed by a broad and expressive flavour spectrum of citrus and white fruits along with carefully integrated oak. To accompany this you will also be poured a glass of the 98 point 2018 vintage and the iconic 2015 to explore.
As we lead into the main course for the evening, soak up the divine views of Sydney Harbour from the windows of Aria Sydney. The Pinot Noir vintages are next, with the Halliday Pinot of the Year, the 2023, accompanied by back vintages 2021 and 2019 to provide a holistic understanding of this classic varietal. Enjoy experiencing the beautiful textures on your tongue with flavours of strawberries to plums on a well-structured palate.
Quintet shall be the final flight of the dinner with it's powerful presence and holding the complete essence of Mount Mary. This flagship cuvee has continued to impress year after year as one of the best Cabernet Blends in Australia, and the 2023 vintage does not disappoint. The 2016 and 2014 cuvees will play nicely with the decadent cheeses served up as the evening winds down. Don't forget to ask all those questions you have had on the tip of your tongue while you have the winemaker in the room with you.
