It's a very exciting time for Burgundy lovers around Australia as the 2020 vintage wines from Domaine YVON CLERGET have landed! This vintage, his sixth, brings great things from Thibaud Clerget as he further establishes his name in the history books of great Burgundy winemakers. His portfolio of appellations is simply incredible with only the greatest crus from the tiny village of Volnay with additional plots in Meursault, Pommard and Clos de Vougeot.
At Domaine Clerget there are seven centuries of family tradition and skill in wine making, which they can proudly date back to 1268. Since then, the Clerget family have loved the Burgundian terroir and have endeavoured to express it faithfully in each and every vintage. Thibaud represents the 28th generation of his family's wine making knowledge, and this year's vintage represents not only 2020 but the abundant family history preceding it.
Not only joining in the vines but in the cellar and office too, Thibaud has a hands-on approach to every step of the winemaking process. "A master in his field, comfortable on his tractor, vigilant in his winery and provident in his cellar; pure Burgundy tradition has clearly been imprinted in his genes." With his taste for adventure and always striving for more, in 2019 Thibaud took the leap to start his own Negoce label. Amazingly, 2020 is only the second year of the project in which we see incredible wines from truly impressive vineyards.
"The first shears' strokes on August 22nd, marked the beginnings of the 2020 vintage harvest. It is a beautiful vintage displaying great colors, and a very nice texture. It also shows great potential for ageing. In terms of quantity, periods of heat wave and a general lack of water, cut once the harvest in two. I love the 2020 wines for their energetic attitude on the palate, wrapped in a magnificent terroir influx from appellations we love to drink! Volnay and Meursault are classy and delicate while Pommard "Rugiens" and Clos de Vougeot are more elegant than ever!
"Thibaud Clerget, who directs this 6 ha domaine, described the 2020 vintage as having “another hot and dry growing season which produced wines that, curiously enough, don’t really seem as though they came from those conditions. I picked from the 22nd to the 28th of August and the fruit really couldn’t have been any cleaner. Yields though were another story and while they were marginally better than what I obtained in 2019 where volumes were off fully 65%, I made exactly 3 more barrels of wine! I used some whole clusters for those terroirs with plenty of clay but much less, or not at all, for those which have more limestone. In both cases though, I vinified extremely carefully and softly as the skins were exceptionally thick so it would have been very easy to over extract. I like the quality a lot, but I just wish there was more of it.” As the comments and rating confirm, I was seriously impressed by the quality of Clerget’s 2020s, and these are wines to search out.
