Our superstar of Saint Aubin, Joseph Colin, has bottled his impressive 2023 vintage and the wines are almost here for you to enjoy. This year's collection once again showcases the exceptional quality and craftsmanship that we have come to expect from this address.
Joseph Colin has poured his passion and expertise into crafting these exquisite wines, each bottle telling a unique story of the terroir and dedication behind it. From elegant Saint Aubin's to powerful Chassagne-Montrachet's, the range offers a diverse selection to cater to every palate.
Saint-Aubin is where the heart of the domaine truly lies, and it is no secret that the 5 Premier Crus of Saint-Aubin are the backbone of the range. From the young vines of "Champlots" expressing greener fruit with great acidity, to the leaner style of "Sentier du Clou" offering a more fluid presentation. Then moving to the generously ripe "Pitangeret" cuvee alongside the concentrated "Murgers dent de Chien", to then end up at the star of appellation this year, the "En Remilly" which is beautifully juicy on the palate vinified perfectly right.
Hailing from the terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet, the premier cru cuvee "En Cailleret" is a true stand out of the 2023 vintage, with its more classical stony profile and terrific grip on the finish. Of course the "Vide Bourse" cuvee is just as presentable with a broader base and a gorgeous saline note to finish.
I invite you to indulge in the artistry of Joseph Colin wines with friends, family, or simply savouring a quiet moment alone. Let each sip transport you to the vineyards of Saint-Aubin and immerse yourself in a world of flavour and sophistication.
TASTING NOTES
2023 BOURGOGNE ALIGOTÉ
Bottled in August. Faint green streak in the pale colour. A light pineapple note on the nose. Perfumed. Then much more tension with a lime note to finish. Drink from 2025-2027. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY "HAUTS DE LA COMBE"
In bottle since September. Pale lemon colour. An attractive quite lean bouquet, yet with elegance. The Joseph Colin style in a nutshell. Definitely lean on the palate yet with ripe enough tendrils of flavour, plus a fresh citrus overcoat. Drink from 2025-2027. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET BLANC
The three plots which have been in the Colin family for generations. Pale lemon yellow. Ripe orchard fruit, a little more flesh evident than the preceding wines. Generous fruit at the front of the palate, maintaining well, through to a persistent finish, with the right little pinpoints of acidity. Complete and attractive Chassagne. Drink from 2027-2030. 90-92 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET ROUGE
From Les Pierres and Poirier du Clos (upper part), the second last vintage before pulling out as the plants are not a top pinot selection. A pale ruby colour. No great nobility to the nose, but it has been made with a light hand. Rather bitter at the finish. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 SAINT-AUBIN "COMPENDIUM"
7 plots, covering two sectors picked at different times. Clean, clear-cut fruit, chiselled, a lime note in the background, but clearly ripe enough fruit throughout. Slightly saline to finish. This is rather fine in its understated style. Drink from 2026-2029. 89-91 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 PULIGNY-MONTRACHET "LE TRÉZIN"
Pale lemon with a lime tint. The bouquet is very welcoming, ripe floral notes but nothing overtly sunny. The fruit fills the mouth deliciously without any fleshy feel, and there is a long, encouraging finish. A delicious treat. Drink from 2027-2030. 90-93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU "CHAMPLOTS"
Planted 2016. These young vines had a bit of hydric stress blockage, but that concentrates the components sometimes. Thus in the end higher degrees and acidity. Pale lemon colour with a green tint. A slightly greener fruit profile followed by white fruit flesh, and dramatic acidity. This will need time to come together but has the makings of something interesting. Drink from 2027-2030. 89-92 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU "SENTIER DU CLOU"
Pale colour with a light green tint. A lean style of fruit here, a little lime wash on the stone fruit, rather more body on the palate but still in a less ripe idiom. Fluid, attractive, and quite crystalline. Drink from 2027-2030. 89-93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU "PITANGERET"
A pale green tint behind the lemon yellow. More generously ripe behind, then a crystalline chalky note. The fruit leans a little more towards the yellow. Fair weight and length. Drink from 2027-2031. 89-92 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU "EN REMILLY"
An even light lemon colour. The limestone shows up well on the nose without excess sun, no roasted stones aspect. Beautifully juicy on the palate, with a lift in every sip, optimum ripeness, the first wine picked and got just exactly right. Bravo. Drink from 2027-2032. 92-95 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU "MURGERS DENTS DE CHIEN"
Another glowing colour with a primrose tint. There is a faint reduction on the nose alongside an evident concentration. This is currently more tightly wound than En Remilly, but should emerge with a similar result. Today I give En Remilly the narrow edge. Drink from 2027-2032. 92-94 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU "EN CAILLERET"
Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet is clearly riper here, yet the slight honeysuckle aromatics are underlaid by a more classical stony profile. White fruit through the middle and then terrific grip to finish. This is more backward in its development but promises extremely well. Exceptional persistence. Drink from 2028-2033. 93-96 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2022 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU "VIDE BOURSE"
Fresh mid lemon. There is a broader appeal to the white fruit here. Classical tension nonetheless, a little less tightly wound than Caillerets but broader based, as one would expect for this vineyard adjacent to Bâtard-Montrachet. A saline note at the finish. Quite complete. Drink from 2028-2033. 92-95 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2023 PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU "LA GARENNE"
A faint green trim to the colour. A fair intensity on the nose, but this does not quite kick on, on the palate. A lemon and lime aspect to the fruit, medium length. Drink from 2027-2031. 92 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
2022 BATARD-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU
Just racked from one barrel to another. Just one barrel made. A fine clear colour with a lemon tint. The bouquet’s powerful white fruit is enhanced by a lightly spicy touch. A faint suggestion of honeysuckle which goes well with the weight of a Bâtard-Montrachet. This retains the Jospeh Colin hallmark with remarkable tension and a slight salinity, but there is no doubting the intensity that goes with it. Drink from 2029-2036. 94-96 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
