Alvina Pernot - Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 2023
An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. Within the Pernot holdings, Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit.
Pale lemon and lime. Much less is in evidence on the nose. Not the supple come-hither, indeed welcoming style of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it is nicely presented on the palate, and like the Bâtard grows discreetly. A good fruit-acid balance, with some little slightly riper nuances at the finish. Three barrels made, one new, as for the Bâtard. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Oct 2024. 94 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy. 100% Chardonnay.
What we say
"Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting new producers to hit our shores. From a phenomenal winemaking family, her style is precise, elegant and delicately reductive."
Technical notes
Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels within the large Pernot holdings. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels mainly from François Frères, until they were racked for bottling.
