Tasting Notes

The Côte-Rôtie “Les Terrasses is bold and structured, with a spectrum of red-to-dark berry fruit alongside an iron earthiness.

Jean-Luc Jamet is an undeniable icon and celebrated producer, crafting some of the most exquisite wines in Côte-Rôtie. Originally working with his brother Jean-Paul, at the family's famed Domaine Jamet estate, the pair parted ways in 2013. The vineyards, comprising of 16 prime hectares in Côte-Rôtie and Côte du Rhône, were divided equally.

What makes the Côte-Rôtie wines from Jean-Luc Jamet so special is his ability to blend more than ten different plots from the best, northern sites (considered the most qualitative) of Côte-Rôtie. These include Lancement, La Landonne, Bonnivières and Les Rochains. It is a mosaic of complex, rocky soils composed of different degrees of schist and granite which underpin the wine's stunning depth of character. These are the many shades that you'll find in this delicate and very complex wine.

The bouquet is bold and structured, with a spectrum of red-to-dark berry fruit alongside an iron earthiness. The palate delivers waves of dark berry fruit, savoury cured meat across the mid-palate, before bakers spice and menthol on the aftertaste. Enjoy with hearty dishes like red meat-driven lasagne and ragu. Drink now with a one-hour decant before serving or lay down till 2030.

2019 - Deep ruby. A mineral and smoke-tinged bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits and liquorice; a floral nuance builds as the wine opens with air. Shows very good energy and spicy lift to its juicy boysenberry and bitter cherry flavours, which are complemented by suggestions of allspice, smoked meat and candied liquorice. Finishes long and taut, with repeating cherry notes, chewy tannic grip and a jolt of spicy cracked pepper. 92 points, Josh Reynolds, Vinous.

100% Syrah.

The 10 different plots on major slopes such as “Lancement,” “La Landonne,” “Fongeant,” “Côte Bodin” and “Les Moutonnes,” are schist-dominated and are all processed into one cuvée "Les Terasses.” The ripeness of the fruit determines the harvest time and Jean-Luc is (together with his brother) one of the last vignerons to practice this philosophy in the region. The plots are partly vinified together and gradually "cross over" assembled and mounted. In addition to the use of a maximum of 20% new barrels (demi-muids and pièces) and 20 to 22 months of barrel aging, to gain complexity, Jean-Luc chooses to ferment 1/3 part in whole clusters.
