Domaine Bernard Gripa - Saint-Péray "Les Pins" 2021
The Saint-Péray “Les Pins” is fresh and fruity, with rocky, mineral tones.
Domaine Bernard Gripa produces equal amounts of white and red wine. This is unusual in a region where white wine production is scarce. Saint-Péray is the southernmost appellation of the northern Rhône Valley. Part of the Domaine’s fine reputation comes from its top-quality Saint-Péray wines. The appellation is lesser known, but savvy wine connoisseurs are wise to its incredible value. “Les Pins” is made from old vines, more than 40 years old.
The bouquet has a vibrant flair, displaying white stone fruit, hints of floral aromas and spice followed by stony minerality. The palate is hedonistic, with zippy citrus and beautiful rich nectarine notes, finished with spice and a mineral-driven mouthfeel. It will accompany seafood perfectly, poultry, fresh salads and rich creamy dishes . Perfect to drink in its youth or for aging till 2025+.
A delicate and aromatic Saint-Peray with notes of apples, flowers and some toasted bread. Medium body with fresh acidity. Mellow and well-rounded with a fresh finish. Drink now. 91 points, James Suckling.
70% Marsanne, 30% Roussanne.
- What we say
- Technical notes
"The Saint Péray “Les Pins” from Domaine Bernard Gripa is fresh, full of stone fruit and mineral flavour. Its complexity will charm you to drink it by itself or with a nice cuisine."
The vineyards in Saint Péray – like most in the northern Rhône Valley – are planted on terraces. It means there is no use of machines, with all work done by hand. Gripa’s team are vigilant in their care. The harvest is collected in cases and brought to the winery to be pressed directly and put into stainless steel vats for a cold maceration before fermentation. The vinification is traditional and the wines undergo their maturation in 228 and 600 litre French oak barrels for eight to nine months. The goal is to keep the terroir* style rather than overpowering the wines in oak flavours.
*Terroir is the specific combination of location, vineyard, climate and people that create a wine. Accordingly, different terroirs produce different wines.
