Domaine Yvon Clerget - Pommard 1er cru "Les Rugiens" 2022
This Pommard 1er cru "Les Rugiens" is mineral, powerful and deep.
Thibaud Clerget took over the family Domaine in 2015; one of the oldest Domaines in the village. The rebirth of one of Volnay’s little treasures then began with six hectares of vineyards located within the best climats* of Burgundy. The vineyard of Pommard 1er cru “Les Rugiens” is located on red clay soils on the upper part of the slope. The vines are 40 years of age on average.
The nose is magnificent, profound, layered and intense, showing notes of subtle red fruits, rich black fruits and high tones of minerality. The palate is structured yet seductive and powerful, full of energy and candied fruits. It can be paired with charcuterie, charcoaled meat, a large array of cow’s milk cheese and roast poultry. Drink now with 35 minutes of decanting or keep until 2030 and beyond.
30% whole bunch vinification, with three new barrels in twelve. Bright crimson purple, with the new wood showing at the moment on the nose. Some red fruit behind. The quality of the vineyard shows in the intensity on the palate, with a little saline touch behind the deep red fruit. Still quite rugged. Drink from 2032-2038. 92-95 pts - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
100% Pinot Noir.
* Climat refers to a named plot of vineyard.
- What we say
- Technical notes
"The “Les Rugiens” is by all means close to being a Grand Cru considering the complexity and depth it displays. The wine has a very well managed power and lots of structured minerality. A wine that impressed!"
At Domaine Yvon Clerget the grapes are hand harvested, sorted in the vineyard and then completely destemmed. The cold maceration takes place for five to seven days and the whole process lasts for 15 to 20 days in a stainless steel tank. During the maceration, pump-overs are used and the cap is pushed down once per day. The wine undergoes its malolactic fermentation in 228 litre French oak barrels and is then matured for twelve months. Before bottling, the wine matures for four months in a stainless steel tank. 25% new French oak is used.
