Tasting Notes

Chateau Latour à Pomerol is effusive and racy right out of the glass and best to be cellar up to 12 years

Chateau Latour a’ Pomerol has a long history in the region that dates all the way back to the mid or late 1800’s when the wine was sold under the name of La-Tour-Pomerol. It was acquired by Madame Loubat, who also owned Château Petrus, in 1917. Jean-Pierre Moueix has farmed the vineyard since 1962 and it was the Lacoste family who retained the estate until 2002, after which it was donated to the Fondation de Foyers de Charite de Chateauneuf de Galaure, a charity. However, the high quality of the wines produced by Latour a’ Pomerol went without much notice until they were written about by the famed wine critic, Robert Parker.

The 2021 Latour shows good density, especially for the year. Whereas the other 2021s have a distinctly linear build, the Grand Vin has quite a bit more textural richness but also less drive through to the finish. Plum, gravel, bittersweet chocolate and liquorice add to a feeling of gravitas. The 2021 feels a bit trapped by its tannin today. That should not be an issue when it is released in a few years time. 96+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

100% Merlot
