Domaine Rougeot - Monthélie "Les Toisières" 2022
The "Les Toisières" is a fresh, full-bodied Chardonnay.
Domaine Rougeot has a long history of making superb white wines from the famed village of Meursault. “Les Toisières” is located just over the road from Meursault and the 1er Cru “La Taupine” (which produces a Pinot Noir). It is an ideal location and the vineyard faces south, allowing for optimal ripening conditions.
On the nose it displays complex flavours of melon, apple and fresh young hazelnuts. The palate is elegant yet powerful, showcasing crunchy fresh apples and white stone fruit followed by a saline profile and toasted hazelnut edge. It matches perfectly with shellfish such as lobster and prawns, an array of cured meats, terrine, chicken and roast pork. It’s drinking deliciously now with a 35-minute decant before serving, and will age till 2026.
Three barrels, with no new oak. Mid yellow, a little fatter and fleshier, but less finesse. There is an attractive fruit weight nonetheless and the wine cleans up to show a fresh white limestone zest. Drink from 2024-2027. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy. 2021 review
100% Chardonnay.
- What we say
- Technical notes
"A cousin of Meursault as we say it. The “Les Toisières” is an amazing value and delivers complexity, roundness and fresh, clean finish. Perfect for your aperitif or with the prawns on the barbecue."
The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard. When the grapes arrive at the winery, they are destemmed and gently brought to the press. After a long and gentle press cycle, the must* is pumped into a concrete tank to undergo its alcoholic fermentation. The “Les Toisières” is vinified like a Meursault, with a long maturation in oak barrels for fifteen months. However, there are no new oak barrels used, so that the wine can express its terroir as much as possible.
*Must is the term for freshly pressed juice that for a red wine contains the skins, seeds and stems of the fruit. For a white wine must only refers to the juice.
