Tasting Notes

An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. Within the Pernot holdings, Alvina and her husband favor earlier-picked fruit. This Batard-Montrachet is sourced from the family, two barrels made in total.

The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a big leap up from the Corton-Charlemagne: much more mineralite and tension - you can smell the terroir here. The palate is well-balanced and slightly austere, with deft touches of crushed limestone and white pepper, strict and linear on the finish, yet very powerful. Could this surpass the outstanding 2021 last year? 95pts, Neal Martin, Vinous.

Pure mid lemon yellow. Immediate class on the nose, picked at the right time. Impeccably balanced on the palate, all the weight one hopes for, but retaining a vivacity as well and an exceptional length of fruit. Pure white orchard fruit all the way. Drink from 2028-2038. 96 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy. 100% Chardonnay.

"Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting new producers to hit our shores. From a phenomenal winemaking family, her style is precise, elegant and delicately reductive."

Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels within the large Pernot holdings. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels mainly from François Frères, until they were racked for bottling.
