The Brilliance of Charles Van Canneyt, From Village to Grand Cru

$536.00

A CURATED, THREE-PACK SELECTION FROM ONE OF BURGUNDY'S RISING STARS

Since 2008, after inheriting winemaking duties at the iconic Domaine Hudelot-Noellat in Chambolle-Musigny, Charles Van Canneyt has worked diligently to ascend Burgundy's highest ranks. And yet Van Canneyt is always seeking improvements. Of course being Alain Hudelot’s grandson set a brilliant precedent for the vigneron's career, but he has worked hard to define a personal style. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to his own project, one where he is able to progress his own ideas.

Like Lalou Bize-Leroy and other legendary winemakers before him, Van Canneyt is buying fruit for his own label. Through an extensive network of Burgundy’s finest growers, he sources the very best grapes. His intimate knowledge of the region enables him to select vineyards in the best locations. It is through his experience at Domaine Hudelot-Noellat, and the profile he has acquired within the community, that Van Canneyt has opened the right doors to source quality fruit.

Once Charles has established such a relationship, he submits his specifications and follows the growth of the grapes through to harvest while the grower helps realise his vision in the vineyard. The grower then presses the white grapes or operates the maceration and vatting period of the red grapes. Charles then collects the must, or the wine, to mature it in his own cellar. This most vital part of the process is handled personally by Charles to ensure the pure and terroir-transparent style associated with Hudelot-Noellat.

  • CHARLES VAN CANNEYT - GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 2017: $168

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin is laced with the essence of rose petal, mint, purplish fruit and laven- der. Weightless on the palate and beautifully perfumed, the 2017 offers terrific delineation and energy throughout, with a discreet touch of oak that frames the finish. The 2017 is an especially refined vil- lage wine with much to recommend it. This is really quite lovely.

  • CHARLES VAN CANNEYT - NUITS-ST-GEORGES 1ER CRU
    "LA RICHEMONE" 2016: $198

The premier cru “La Richemone” vineyard is nestled in between the famous premier crus "Aux Murgers", "Aux Cras", "Aux Chaignots" and "Les Damodes". All these being on the Vosne-Romanée side, therefore more on the seductive, spice-driven flavour profile. "La Richemone" shows the power and muscle that are typical of the site. Super-ripe black cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice and game add to the wine's burly, potent feel. On the palate, the structure is apparent, though it holds nicely in this powerful wine. It can be paired with roast chicken, beef burgundy, game, charcoaled beef or cow's milk cheese. It can be decanted for 30 minutes before serving or cellared up until 2028+. 100% Pinot Noir.

  • CHARLES VAN CANNEYT - CORTON GRAND CRU
    "LES RENARDES" 2016: $199
Bright floral notes, lifted, red-toned fruit and mid-weight structure are signatures of the 2016 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru. The 2016 is nicely done, but I would have preferred to see more depth, concentration and site-specific character. Hopefully future vintages will be a bit more representative of what this Grand Cru can offer.
