TASTING NOTES

  • DOMAINE DE BEL-AIR - BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES "LES GRANITS BLEUS" 2020

Domaine de Bel-Air, owned and operated by Jean-Marc Lafont, produces Beaujolais wines of great finesse. It is indeed Jean-Marc’s exemplary work in his well-located vineyards that is the key to these magnificent wines.

The Beaujolais-Villages “Granits Bleus” is a bright ruby colour. Aromas of dark berries and cherry, plus a hint of spiciness in the background. Supple and open-knit, offering bitter cherry and blackberry flavours that tighten up slowly with air. Closes smooth and jammy, with good, dark-fruit-tinged persistence. 100% Gamay.

  • MAISON ADVINAM - ALLUMEE ROUGE VDP

Maison Advinam is located in Saint-Morillon, in the Graves region of Bordeaux. The wines are produced in Gironde and Roussillon by Anne Buiatti, in the philosophy of natural wines. The Maison is fully certified biodynamic and organically farmed. Overall there are zero additives and no sulphur and what really sets Advinam apart is that there is no electricity being used in the winery.

The wine is an explosion of fresh, wild red berries, sap, grilled leaves, rosemary, and orange peel with subtle notes of honey. The palate is lively, great acid with beautiful red fruits melting on the palate. The finish is clean, very pure and highly refreshing. Drink now. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon & Sémillon.

  • PITHON-PAILLE - BOURGUEIL ROUGE "GRAVIERS" 2018

Jo Pithon started his famed Domaine in 1978. His parents were winemakers in Anjou, and Jo has done as much as anyone to lift the appellation, and the Loire Valley as whole, onto the world stage. His focus on dry whites, now commonplace, was very innovative in the last two decades of the 20th century. He was also at the forefront of organic farming, the use of indigenous yeasts and the rejection of sugar and acid additions.

Fully organic, this beautiful wine showcases a deep red colour with flavours of black fruits, leather and earthy tones. The palate is silky, very well balanced with great depth. Drink now by decanting for 35 minutes or keep until 2028+. 100% Cabernet Franc.

  • CHATEAU PEYRAT - GRAVES ROUGE 2019

Château Peyrat is located in the town of Conais, on the famous historic Route des Graves (N113), a stone's throw from the Sauternes vineyards. Run by Damien and Ludovic Martial, alongside Aurélien Dulor they work to promote mechanical soil work, restore natural balances to promote biodiversity and give wines a unique and optimal expression. Choosing to let the plant live, express itself, create a symbiosis between the elements is what forms a unique taste within Peyrat wines.

The 2019 Peyrat, which I did not taste from barrel, has a well-defined bouquet of vivacious red currant and blackberry fruit, the oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a crisp line of acidity and a brightness on the finish that is appealing. This is a finely built Graves to drink over the next decade. Cellaring time: 8-10 years. 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc.

  • CHATEAU LESTAGE DARQUIER - MOULIS EN MEDOC 2019

Château L’Estage Darquier has been in the Bernard family for six generations, since its creation at the beginning of the 19th century by Mrs L’Estage and Mr Darquier. Their daughter Jeanne took over the property with her husband Aimé Bernard. Later, it was their son Hector managing production all the way until 1929. Then Marc until 1970, Jean Michel until 1982 and finally François Bernard - the present owner. The eight hectares of vineyards are well located in Moulis-en-Medoc, on the left bank of Bordeaux. The average age of the vineyards is twenty years old, planted at 6,800 vines per hectare on gravels and south, south-east facing.

The nose opens up with hints of spices, torrefied coffee beans, fresh blackcurrant and blackberries. It is rich and vibrant at the same time. On the palate, the balance is striking with ample mouth-feel, silky lines and some fresh fruits melting in the delicately infused oak flavours. Drink now or cellar up until 2028+. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc.

  • LE PETIT ST VINCENT - SAUMUR-CHAMPIGNY "PELO" 2019

In the small circle of elite producers in the heartland of Saumur-Champigny in Varrains, the lively, friendly and talented Dominique Joseph is impossible to miss. Fully organically farmed since 1992, the Domaine grows 12 hectares of vineyard perfectly located over 55 different locations. The "Pélo" cuvée is made solely from the oldest vines of the Domaine in the heartland of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, planted on clay soils and tuffeau limestone.

On the nose, the beautiful and elegant fruits give way to delicate notes of dry herbs with airy flavours of strawberry and blackcurrant. The palate is structured with fine tannins for a medium to long finish. It can be enjoyed at a barbecue, with lamb cutlets, white meat and slightly chilled with cheese. Drink now or keep in the cellar up to 2023+. 100% Cabernet Franc.
