LE PETIT SAINT VINCENT - SAUMUR-CHAMPIGNY "PELO" 2018 - $45
In the small circle of elite producers in the heartland of Saumur-Champigny in Varrains, the lively, friendly and talented Dominique Joseph is impossible to miss. Fully organically farmed since 1992, the Domaine grows 12 hectares of vineyard perfectly located over 55 different locations. The "Pélo" cuvée is made solely from the oldest vines of the Domaine in the heartland of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, planted on clay soils and tuffeau limestone.
On the nose, the beautiful and elegant fruits give way to delicate notes of dry herbs with airy flavours of strawberry and blackcurrant. The palate is structured with fine tannins for a medium to long finish. It can be enjoyed at a barbecue, with lamb cutlets, white meat and slightly chilled with cheese. Drink now or keep in the cellar up to 2020+. 100% Cabernet Franc.

"Les Poyeux" is a single vineyard ideally located with south exposure to the sun. Dominique Joseph has one hectare in "Les Poyeux" split into two vineyards growing on yellow sandy soils at the top of the slope and on clay and limestone in the lower part of the slope.
The bouquet is powerful and opens up to notes of sage, wild flowers and black fruits. The palate is dense, yet vibrant with aromas of black fruits; wet forest arising from an otherwise mineral structure. This is very impressive indeed. It can be enjoyed at a barbecue, with lamb cutlets or slow cooked lamb shoulder. Drink now or keep in the cellar up to 2028+. 100% Cabernet Franc.
- CLAU DE NELL - ANJOU - CABERNET FRANC 2016 - $69
Clau de Nell is a tiny, triumphant, biodynamic winery. It is the brainchild of some of the wine world’s most forward thinkers. The late Anne-Claude Leflaive bought Clau de Nell in 2008 and appointed Sylvain Potin as manager. The Cabernet Franc vineyard is composed of old vines, that have been grown organically for some time.
The nose is fresh and floral with bright cherry and raspberry fruit. Expressive with some grippy tannins, but they are fine-grained and work well on the background of the bright raspberry and cherry fruit. There is a lovely focus here. You can drink it now by decanting it for 20 minutes or cellar up to 2026+. It goes well with charcuterie, lamb racks, beef and cow cheeses. 100% Cabernet Franc.
- PHILIPPE ALLIET - CHINON "VIEILLES VIGNES" 2017 - $55
This exquisite Chinon is made from the oldest vines of the Domaine – averaging 60 years. It is a blend from varying plots of gravel and sandy soil vineyards in the small village of Cravant-Les-Côteaux by the Vienne River.
The wine develops very well on the nose with notes of blackcurrant, red fruits, a subtle saltiness and some earthy flavours. The taste is complex; firm tannins, dark fruits and duration on the palate. It pairs well with a braised beef dish, white meats or a platter of charcuterie. It is ready to drink if decanted for 30 minutes before service and could age another five to seven years. 100% Cabernet Franc.
- PHILIPPE ALLIET - CHINON "HUISSERIE" 2016 - $65
From one of the most impressive producers of Chinon, Domaine Alliet, the Huisserie vineyard is located uphill, on a premier slope in Cravant-les-Côteaux. The soil is composed of yellow limestone (tuffeau) on the surface and clay and flint below. The grapes ripen perfectly in this south facing vineyard. The nose is full, complex and defining a pure and elegant profile with notes of red berries, light pepper and forest trees.
The taste is medium bodied, refreshing and refined with firm tannins. It can be paired with game dishes, beef stew and strong cheeses. This amazing wine could be cellared for more than ten years. However, you can drink it sooner by decanting for 45 minutes before serving. 100% Cabernet Franc.
- PHILIPPE ALLIET - CHINON "COTEAU DE NOIRÉ" 2016 - $79
The Coteau de Noiré is the top cuvée of Domaine Alliet. The grapes originate from a single plot of vineyard, ideally located on the slope of the Chinon hill. The grapes ripen perfectly in this south facing vineyard. This wine is widely considered by critics to be in the pantheon of Chinon wines; the nose is full and complex with notes of dark fruit, fresh coffee beans, subtle vanilla and pepper.
The taste is full bodied and refined with firm tannins. It can be paired with game dishes, beef stew and strong cheeses. This amazing wine could be cellared for more than ten years. However, you can drink this wine sooner by decanting for 45 minutes before serving. 100% Cabernet Franc.
