Tasting Notes

"Les Folatieres" is opulently reveals aromas of dried roses, spice and preserved lemon.

An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. “Les Folatières” hails from the higher-altitude parcels within the Pernot family's copious holdings in this prime 1er Cru, from 50-plus-year-old vines.

The bouquet opulently reveals aromas of dried roses, spice and preserved lemon before white peach and iodine. The palate reflects its high-altitude terror with wonderful intensity; white crunchy stone fruits, zesty citrus oil and smoky, flinty minerality mark the experience. It can be paired with roast poultry, rich oysters, crayfish, scallops and white fish. Drink now with a 30-minute decant before serving or cellar it up until 2030+. 100% Chardonnay.

The vineyard was exchanged in a previous generation between the Chartron and Pernot families. Pale primrose. The bouquet is really stylish, a more chiselled type of Folatières, less peachy than the family domaine. Perhaps some of that is coming out now. This is spectacular with almost grand cru intensity while staying light on its feet. Very persistent and with waves of different flavours coming. 6 barrels made, try to get some! 96 points, Jasper Morris

"Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting new producers to hit our shores. From a phenomenal winemaking family, her style is precise, elegant and delicately reductive."

Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels within the large Pernot holdings. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels mainly from François Frères, until they were racked for bottling.
