- BEL AIR - FLEURIE "GRANITS ROSES" 2017 - $41
This Fleurie Gamay is seductive and fresh. Domaine de Bel-Air, owned and operated by Jean-Marc Lafont is producing Beaujolais wines of great finesse. It is indeed Jean-Marc’s exemplary work in his very well-located vineyards that is the key to these magnificent wines. The Fleurie “Granits Roses” is from a vineyard located on a slope with pink granite soil. The vines are on average 40 years old.
This wine is seductive, showing notes of fresh cherry, cherry stalk, minerality and hints of violet. The palate is refined, with soft and silky tannins. It pairs well with osso-bucco, blanquette de veau or goats cheese. Drink now or cellar it up until 2023. 100% Gamay.
- MEE GODARD - MORGON "CORCELETTE" 2017 - $59:
Domaine Mee Godard allows us a glimpse of the future of the Beaujolais region at its best. It’s a small Domaine of six hectares of vineyards, mostly located in the sumptuous Morgon. The uncompromising attitude established by Mee, coupled with very old vines across the estate (60 years of age on average) produces state of the art, profound, complex wines with lots of character. The “Corcelette” vineyard is located at the Northwestern end of Morgon with sandy and granitic soils. The bouquet sets the tone for a powerful wine, alluring with notes of blackberries, bitter cherry and cloves adding to the depth of flavour. The palate reflects the nose’s silky structure with dry extracts and an earthy finish. This is elegant yet powerful with fine lines. It can be paired with game, charcoaled rib eye, charcuterie and a cow cheese. It will benefit being decanted for 35 minutes before serving and it can be kept up until 2027+. JEAN-LUC JAMET - PINOT NOIR "SCHISTE" 2017 - $58:
This Pinot Noir "Schiste" is textural and spicy with delicious stewed fruit. Jean-Luc Jamet is one of the most iconic producers of Côte-Rôtie and Côte du Rhône. His journey began in 1991, working alongside his brother Jean-Paul at the famed family estate “Domaine Jamet”. The magnificent Domaine occupied some of the the best parts of Côte-Rôtie and Côte du Rhône – but in 2013, the brothers parted ways and split the 16 hectare estate into equal halves.
This Pinot “Schiste” is powerful and profound, the nose is stewed raspberry and cherries with smoky barbeque meat rub spice and bacon. The palate explodes in the mouth with crunchy red berries and earthy spice driven tannin. It can be enjoyed with game dishes like duck and quail, kangaroo, smoked meats, charred eggplant. Drink now. 100% Pinot Noir.
- PHILIPPE ALLIET - CHINON "VIEILLES VIGNES" 2017 - $55:
Vieilles Vignes Cabernet Franc is complex with dark fruit flavours. This exquisite Chinon is made from the oldest vines of the Domaine – averaging 60 years. It is a blend from varying plots of gravel and sandy soil vineyards in the small village of Cravant-Les-Côteaux by the Vienne River.
The wine develops very well on the nose with notes of blackcurrant, red fruits, a subtle saltiness and some earthy flavours. The taste is complex; firm tannins, dark fruits and duration on the palate. It pairs well with a braised beef dish, white meats or a platter of charcuterie. It is ready to drink if decanted for 30 minutes before service and could age another five to seven years. 100% Cabernet Franc.
- FABRICE DODANE - GRENACHE "P'TIT COT" 2017 - $46:
This Arbois Rouge "Grenache" is juicy, spicy and delicious. The Jura region is one of France's smallest wine regions comprising just 2,500 hectares. Despite its size however, it has grown a steadfast reputation for the sheer quality of its wines. Fabrice Dodane, owner of Domaine de Saint Pierre is part of a small group of discerning producers, which includes Jean-Francois Ganevat, who push the boundaries, making stunning, profound and complex wines.
The wine is a little project that Fabrice tried using Grenache fruit from the south of the Rhone, it is cold soak macerated for 30 days whole bunched then fermented in stainless steel with native Jura yeast and no sulphur added. This wine is spicy and structured on the bouquet there is heaps of bright red and blue fruit, bakers spice like star anise and cloves followed by a earthy undertone. The palate is juicy with the red and blue fruits showing through, spice following the mid palate and dusty tannin to finish. It can be drunk with charcuterie, roast chicken and pork and charcoaled rib eye. Drink now or keep up until 2026+. 100% Grenache. Please decant for 25 minutes and serve in big Syrah glasses.
CHATEAU BARRAIL DU BLANC - ST EMILION GRAND CRU 2014 - $59:
Chateau Barrail du Blanc is a delicate, fresh and highly enjoyable wine to drink now. Château Barrail du Blanc produces wines that are exceptional for their depth and consistency. Owned by the same family for over 150 years, this property is located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, in the south of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation.
On the nose, Chateau Barrail du Blanc opens to a subtle nose of red fruits basket, raspberry, blackcurrant then earthy notes such as sandalwood, dry leaves, mild spices. The palate is elegant, with dark cherry, tar with a silky structure and a powerful final. A delicate wine that is a perfect partner for refined dishes. It can be drunk now or cellared until 2023+. 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc.
