PULIGNY-MONTRACHET VS CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET

In the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet share the uncontested title of the prince of Chardonnay. This fine, broad hillside brings out the very highest expression of Burgundian Chardonnay. The divine Grand Cru Montrachet (pronounced “Monrachay”) was officially appended to the name of Chasssagne and Puligny in 1879 however the AOC wasn’t created till 1937.

The hill of Montrachet sits at altitudes between 220 and 325 metres with exposures facing east and southeast. The soil types in this area range from brown limestone to pebbly limestones, through to grey and pink marls and sandy soils with a Jurassic basis. The border of Chassagne and Puligny is split by their Grand Cru vineyards (Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet). There are 55 Premier Crus in Chassagne and 17 in Puligny surrounding the village appellations.

  • JOSEPH COLIN - CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2018 - $145

Joseph Colin initially trained at Domaine Marc Colin, working alongside his brother, Pierre-Yves, to make the family wines. In 2016, Joseph decided to create his own Domaine, and, subsequently, inherited just over six hectares of vineyards from his family holding, representing about nineteen different appellations, to start his exciting new venture. This Village offering is a blend of three parcels, "Les Meix Goudard," "En Journoblot" and "Blanchot-Dessous", which each lie on clay and limestone soils.

The bouquet is alluring and focused with notes of toffee apple, white peach, orange blossom and honeysuckle. The palate is well balanced and offers an irresistible depth of white stone fruit, grapefruit and lime. The notes fill the mid-palate before a white pepper and mineral finish. It can be paired with roast poultry, rich oysters, crayfish, scallops and white fish. You can drink it now with a 30-minute decant before serving or cellar it up until 2025+. 100% Chardonnay.

  • JOSEPH COLIN - PULIGNY-MONTRACHET "LE TREZIN" 2018 - $145

This comes from vines planted in 1970 from 0.32 hectares in the lieu-dit "Le Trezin" in Puligny-Montrachet. The vineyard is the only Village-level site in Blagny positioned 400 metres above sea level. It is located at the top of the slope and is characterised by its clay-poor, limestone-rich soil, steep incline and cooler location.

This Puligny-Montrachet reflects the freshness and purity of its limestone terroir, with aromas of grapefruit and lemon zest, green apple, lifted notes of almond, hazelnut and burnt butter. The palate is nicely concentrated showing a large spectrum of white orchard fruit, buttery and mineral characters with a lengthy finish. It will perfectly pair with fine foods such as foie gras, caviar, oysters, crayfish, scallops and white fish. You can drink it now with a 30-minute decant before serving or cellar it up until 2028+. 100% Chardonnay.

  • ALVINA PERNOT - PULIGNY-MONTRACHET "VIEILLES VIGNES" 2018 - $158

An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. The "Vieilles Vignes" comes from a vineyard planted in 1982 from "Les Enseignères" and "Perrieres."

This Puligny-Montrachet is immediately expressive, with white floral aromas, ripe stone fruit and honeysuckle perfume leaping from the glass.The palate is precise with intensity and volume; a myriad of white and yellow orchard fruit, citrus characters and rocky minerality mark the experience. It will pair perfectly with fine foods such as foie gras, caviar, oysters, crayfish, scallops and white fish. Drink now with a 30-minute decant before serving or cellar it up until 2028+. 100% Chardonnay.
