The 2017 vintage in Burgundy was excellent, providing quality, quantity and relief for the region’s vignerons. However, the truth is that 2017 came perilously close to repeating the disaster of 2016. Another warm start to the season in February and March led to an early bud break, and once again growers were looking nervously at the weather forecast, crossing their fingers for low pressure and mild weather. Alas, the middle of April saw temperatures plummet across France, rarely rising above freezing point for around two weeks. Hot weather followed hard on the heels of the April chills, in some instances disrupting flowering, also stressed the vines, sometimes shrivelling berries and retarding physiological ripening. Then, in late August, much needed rain brought relief, helping vines to bring their fruit to fuller maturity. By late August and early September, harvesting had begun and was finished by the end of September.


(from ~70 year old vines). A strikingly fresh and very pretty nose combines notes of various dark berries with those of earth and forest floor. There is solid density to the punchy medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely sense of detail that is enhanced by the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the youthfully austere, complex and well-balanced finish. This is an excellent Gevrey villages and worth your interest.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin is laced with the essence of rose petal, mint, purplish fruit and laven- der. Weightless on the palate and beautifully perfumed, the 2017 offers terrific delineation and energy throughout, with a discreet touch of oak that frames the finish. The 2017 is an especially refined vil- lage wine with much to recommend it. This is really quite lovely.

Pierre-Henri Rougeot is a young vigneron with generations of family roots in the town of Meursault. He grew up learning farming and the craft of winemaking with his father and by studying in Beaune. In 2017, he decided to add one more activity, a small negoce where he could make wines his way. The fruits come from his family estate, vineyards which are farmed organically. The production is really small, one barrel here of one cuvee, two over there. Pierre-Henri makes his wines with little intervention meaning No SO2 until bottling, no fining and no filtration, the reds are macerated with whole-cluster, and age in neural barrels, the whites are pressed directly in barrels, no battonage and aging sur lees.

The Bouquet is powerful with elegance showing a lovely spectrum of red to black fruits, red clay spice and a slight forest floor earthiness. The palate is rounded but velvety with red fruit showing at the front then rolling through to a savoury chewy acidity and minerality finished off with beautiful rounded tannins. It can be enjoyed with venison, veal, duck, quail, kangaroo, smoked meats and charred eggplant. Drink now with a 1hr decant or age till 2028+. 100% Pinot Noir.
