Tasting Notes

This Aligoté Les Plumes is bright, lively and textury.

Domaine Rougeot has a long history of making superb white wines from the famed village of Meursault. Their "Les Plumes" vineyard is located in Meursault, east of the famous RN74 where one finds richer soils of predominantly clay and small limestone rocks.

This is a wine full of energy; bright with notes of citrus, white flowers, oyster shell and fresh nuts on the nose. The palate has a round attack but plenty of lively aromas of lemon peel, dry extracts, light orange peel and a clean-cut finish. There is a lovely dry, fresh palate to the otherwise textural weight. It will benefit from being decanted for 15 minutes and it can be cellared up until 2022 or beyond. It goes well with seafood, oysters, white fish, scallops and also mild charcuterie.

The vineyard lies low in the village but it is on very limestone soil, more so than Monatine for example. The grape mix is a blend of the golden Aligoté and more productive plants. Mid yellow colour, at first the nose flirts with volatility, but this soon disappears. This is majestic, a great wine whatever the category, whatever the grape. Pure white fruit with excellent flesh, not just really pure but clearly perfectly balanced. Apparently its just 11.8% but tastes ripe. Tingle factor at the finish! 88-90 points, Jasper Morris.

100% Aligoté, No S02.

"The first vintage of “Les Plumes” at Domaine Rougeot and it’s a real success. Aligoté is making a strong comeback and for good reasons. It’s lighter than Chardonnay but it doesn’t compromise on complexity nor texture. A superb wine to try!"

The “Les Plumes” is handpicked: the grapes are graded at the vineyard and then again at the Domaine on the sorting table. After pressing, alcoholic fermentation begins in French oak barrels and then undergos malolactic fermentation. The wine matures in oak barrels for 12 months, delivering a nice textural and round body to the wine. The wine is then bottled without any filtration or clarification.
