Tasting Notes

This Saint-Joseph Syrah is full-bodied with a lovely freshness.

Domaine Bernard Gripa produces astonishing Syrah (Shiraz) in the Saint-Joseph appellation. This wine is from older vineyards that range from 30-45 years old.The vineyards are planted on terraces of granite soil specific to this appellation.

The Saint-Joseph displays a great nose of blackberries, black pepper and a dense full-bodied taste. A lovely freshness and saltiness on the palate offers a point of difference. Pair it with roast lamb, beef stew or spicy dishes. You can cellar it for a good ten years or enjoy it in its youth by decanting it for at least 45 minutes before serving.

Shimmering violet colour. Primary red and blue fruit aromas, along with suggestions of olive, smoked meats and cracked pepper. Offers fleshy, appealingly sweet cherry and blackberry flavours that turn spicier and firm up through the back half. Subtly chewy tannins add grip to a long smoky finish that leaves cherry and spice notes behind. 91-93 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous.

100% Syrah.

"The Saint-Joseph red from Domaine Gripa is a top level Syrah from the Rhône Valley. You can expect a lot of complexity, full-bodied taste with a lot of elegance. Yes, that combination exists with this wine!"

The vineyards in Saint-Joseph – like most in the northern Rhône Valley – are planted on terraces. It means there is no use of machines, with all work done by hand. Gripa’s team are vigilant in their care. The vinification is traditional and the wines undergo their maturation in 228 litre French oak barrels.
