Tasting Notes

This Moulin-à-Vent Gamay is bold and muscly.

Domaine de Bel-Air, owned and operated by Jean-Marc Lafont is producing Beaujolais wines of great finesse. It is indeed Jean-Marc’s exemplary work in his very well-located vineyards that is the key to these magnificent wines. The Moulin-à-Vent “Burdelines” is from a vineyard planted on sandy granite and manganese of a salmon hue. The vines are on average 50 years old and bring a natural concentration to this wine.

The nose is extremely complex with floral notes, dry leaves, and faded rose melding with some ripe black fruits. This wine is muscly and has long length on the palate. Try it with barbequed meat, sausages or meat cooked in sauce. It can be enjoyed in its youth by decanting it 30 minutes before serving or cellared up until 2026. 100% Gamay.

I love the ripe blackberry aroma, plus the roast meat, floral and licorice notes of this beautifully balanced Moulin-a-Vent. Here is the elegant and fresh side of the appellation but without compromising on power, with the well-crafted tannins building nicely on the long finish. Many years of life ahead of it. Drink or hold. 93 points, James Suckling.

"This Moulin-à-Vent “Burdelines” has a very detailed nose highlighting the great terroirs it is from. The additional maturation in oak barrels has settled this bold and muscly wine. It lives up to its reputation of being the king of Beaujolais wines."

At Domaine de Bel-Air, from harvest to bottling, the process is gentle and simple. All the grapes are harvested by hand with a first selection made in the vineyard. The grapes which are not yet ripe enough or damaged are left and the remainder are taken to the winery. They are then sorted a second time on a sorting table to eliminate further damaged berries and grapes that are not yet ripe enough. These select grapes along with some destemmed grapes go into an open vat to undergo alcoholic fermentation.

When the process is finished, the remaining grapes are pressed in a pneumatic press and the wine is matured in a stainless steel vat as well as in French oak barrels for nine months before bottling.
