Tasting Notes

"Les Folatieres" is opulently reveals aromas of dried roses, spice and preserved lemon.

An exciting new arrival on the scene in the Côte de Beaune is Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of Paul Pernot of Domaine Paul Pernot and cousin of Philippe Pernot of Domaine Pernot Belicard. After working for three years at her grandfather's Domaine, Alvina and her husband, Philippe Abadie, set up a tiny Domaine and Maison in Puligny-Montrachet. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels, until they were racked for bottling. “Les Folatières” hails from the higher-altitude parcels within the Pernot family's copious holdings in this prime 1er Cru, from 50-plus-year-old vines.

The bouquet opulently reveals aromas of dried roses, spice and preserved lemon before white peach and iodine. The palate reflects its high-altitude terror with wonderful intensity; white crunchy stone fruits, zesty citrus oil and smoky, flinty minerality mark the experience. It can be paired with roast poultry, rich oysters, crayfish, scallops and white fish. Drink now with a 30-minute decant before serving or cellar it up until 2030+. 100% Chardonnay.

The first of three separate subdivisions of Folatières which have been made and bottled apart. Pale green tint. This is honeyed on the nose, with a little oatmeal, rather delicious in its much riper style but that takes away the classicism. Three barrels made. Drink from 2026-2033. 91 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

"Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting new producers to hit our shores. From a phenomenal winemaking family, her style is precise, elegant and delicately reductive."

Alvina and her husband favour earlier-picked fruit and higher-altitude parcels within the large Pernot holdings. For the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot used no new oak, with all wines aged on their lees, in used barrels mainly from François Frères, until they were racked for bottling.
